How to Declutter Your House

How to Declutter Your House

Clutter creates a physically chaotic environment and, in turn, limits your ability to focus. In fact, this visual distraction of clutter has also been proven to have a negative impact on mental health. With increased levels of anxiety, stress, and depression among people living in an untidy home.

Having a decluttered and organised home is immensely important in maintaining a clear mind and a comfortable living space.

Following our tips for easy ways to declutter your home can help you feel that much better in your space.

Declutter Visible Spaces First

Starting small and decluttering a space that is consistently in your eyeline and bothering you is a great way to begin. Whether this is a kitchen bench or an office desk, prioritising these contained, more manageable spaces will result in faster results. Seeing these results will ultimately create a sense of accomplishment that can be used as motivation to tackle bigger jobs.

If you are still struggling to get motivated, time yourself. Give yourself 15 minutes to start decluttering a small space. These 15 minutes of decluttering should hopefully then make the rest of the job seem a bit more manageable.

Haven’t Used It In A While? Get Rid Of It.

The easiest way to decide if something should stay or go is to ask yourself if it has been used recently. If the answer is no, then these items should be donated, recycled, or put in the bin.

If you still believe that the item will prove useful eventually, put it in a box out of the way and keep it for 6 months. If it has been used, then fantastic! Keep the item. However, if the item still has not been touched, consider getting rid of it.

Save Buying Storage Until After You Declutter

A lot of people get ahead of themselves when they decide to start decluttering and purchase a range of new storage solutions. However, new storage solutions will not solve the problem until after you have decluttered all of your unused items.

Sometimes, storage solutions only encourage more clutter to build up because there is more space for it to go.

It is ideal to clear your space and then decide whether new storage solutions will improve organisational capacity.

Take A Picture, It Will Last Longer

Sometimes, you find yourself halfway through a large home decluttering project and may wonder if you have even made a difference. One way to help with this is to take a quick picture before getting started. Then, when you are starting to lose motivation, you can check back in with this picture and admire your progress.

Go Over Decluttered Spaces A Few Months Later

Although your space should now look and feel much clearer, it is always a productive idea to have another look at places you recently decluttered.

Coming back to these now less chaotic spaces allows for a new perspective on the space. This time, beyond the initial decluttering, it can open your eyes to things you no longer need. These things could be objects you haven't thought of, or haven’t even used since you last decluttered. Maybe during your first round of decluttering, you overestimated the object's usefulness; if it still hasn't been used months later… it might be time for it to move on.
