8 Signs It's Time To Declutter Your Home

It’s easy for clutter to accumulate over time, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from your home. When the clutter starts to become a problem, you may start to recognise subtle signs that indicate you need to declutter. These signs can be physical signals or natural thought processes that happen when your house is getting out of control.

Here are some common signs that your home could benefit from a decluttering session. This list will help you identify when it’s time to take action.

1. You can’t find things when you need them

Ever find yourself constantly searching for stuff because you have no idea where you put it? That’s a clear indicator that it’s time to declutter and simplify. After you’ve removed unwanted items, assign a specific spot for each item. This will make finding what you need quicker and easier. The kitchen, kid’s rooms, and wardrobes are all common spaces that tend to accumulate stuff quickly.

2. You feel overwhelmed when at home

Your home should be a calm environment where you can relax. If you find yourself overwhelmed and stressed in your space, that’s a sign that it’s time to declutter. Living with clutter can be both physically and emotionally draining. It makes simple daily tasks feel like a major struggle. There is a limit to how much stuff you can effectively manage. If you feel constantly overwhelmed by the sheer volume of your possessions, you've likely exceeded this threshold.

3. You own things you don’t use or have lots of duplicate items

Decluttering involves removing things you don’t or no longer use. Finding multiples of the same item or unopened items is a sign that you have more than you need. These unwanted items take up valuable space and contribute to disorganisation. A good rule to follow is that if you haven’t used something for over a year, it might be time to get rid of it.

4. Your storage spaces are overflowing and surfaces are cluttered

If you notice your cupboards or drawers filling up with things, it may be time to declutter these storage areas. An indicator that you’ve got too much stuff is when it’s spilling out everywhere – overflowing drawers, piles on countertops, and clutter on the floor. This is very common with clothes and in bathrooms or kitchens. To keep your space organised, only keep what you can actually store in your available drawers and cupboards.

5. You feel like you don’t have enough things

We’ve all stood in front of a full wardrobe and said “I have nothing to wear!” The first thing you need to do before you go out to buy more clothes is to declutter. When your home is disorganised, it’s natural to think you need more items when in reality, you actually need less. This same sentiment applies to other areas of the home as well (e.g. “I don’t have enough coffee cups”).

Clothing and kitchen utensils are two categories of items that can very easily get out of control. You usually only start thinking that you don’t have enough clothes when these items have become unorganised (e.g. all of your clothes are dirty). This can become a vicious cycle leading to more clutter. If you ever feel like you don’t have enough, go through a decluttering process before you buy more items.

6. You are embarrassed to invite people over

Dreading visits from friends and family due to clutter? We've all been there: anticipating a visit from loved ones, only to find ourselves frantically hiding the chaos. Instead, see it as a golden opportunity to declutter. The thought of guests observing your home with fresh eyes can be a powerful motivator to clear away unwanted items.

7. You don’t love the stuff you currently have

If you don't genuinely like an item or find it valuable, it might be time to consider letting it go. A popular method for decluttering is to ask yourself if an item makes you happy. While this approach might not apply to every single item, it is a helpful guideline. It’s important to be realistic and only keep possessions that you like.

8. It takes you a long time to clean your house

Another sign that you have too much clutter is that it takes ages to clean and tidy your house. Once you declutter, it will take you less time to get your whole house cleaned. The fewer things you have, the easier it is to organise. If you feel like you’re spending too much time cleaning and picking stuff up, that’s a clear sign that it’s time to get rid of some things.
